it seems like the macros are not properly found.
make sure you:
- have the file "src/m4/gem.m4"
(this file holds the macros you seem to be missing)
- have correctly run:
 $ cd ..../Gem/src && ./autogen.sh
before running ./configure

are there any errors when running ./autogen.sh?
