to be honest, this is not an "integrity-defeating sloppiness" in w32,
but a deliberate design decision made by microsoft.

the problem comes from people who are used the
*nix ways (like me) and who are surprised by their implicit assumptions.
since most devs here are more into *nix, it took a while till somebody
came up with an idea what the problem might be.
