[PD] textfile - No output? Unsure of usage.

Hi -
   Fairly new to PD. Trying to read a text file and [textfile] doesn't seem
to be doing anything. Read doesn't error when I have a valid file name.
textfile never bangs from the right output so I'm not even sure it is doing
anything. The left output won't seem to do anything. I've tried to attach
print, but got no output. Tried unpack then print but no output.

Many of the examples I've found online don't seem to be working for me. I
can't produce any output from it. My goal is to read in a file with 1
number. I want to use that number as a variable to control which part of
the patch runs.

[textfile]

[print]   [bang]

What am I doing wrong? How do I go about debugging it? I get nothing to the
output.
