Github repos have wiki pages and there is a download zip button on the
right side that downfall;dos the repo contents as a zip file which means
you don;t need to manually create zips. If you need versioning, just make
git tags which people can select in the branch drop down menu in the upper
left.

We use the wiki for libpd, for example: https://github.com/libpd/libpd/wiki
