just run "file" on the given file, as in:
$ file zexy.d_fat
zexy.d_fat: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
zexy.d_fat (for architecture i386): Mach-O bundle i386
zexy.d_fat (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit bundle x86_64
