[PD] specify MIDI device with a loadbang?

depends on your definition of "vanilla".
the "mediasettings" library provides a [midisettings] object that allows
you to query and set the midi devices.
it's an external but works with vanilla.

i'm not sure i can follow.
if the device is not connected, there is no need to "lose" it, as it is
already gone.
or do you mean that you have configured Pd to use your midi-device, then
unplug it and start Pd (it's obviously not there), then plug it in and
re-start Pd and it is not picked up?

if so, you can specify the MIDI-device to use using the "-mididev"
cmdline flag (overriding the preferences)
