[PD] check current GEM version

[Max]

Once a Gem object is loaded (try [Gem]) it will show in the console with
log level >1

mine shows
GEM: ver: 0.93.3
GEM: compiled: Jan 14 2014

with Gem installed from the ubuntu repositories.
