[PD] Pure Data computation performance (vs. native code)?

What do you know about performance of Pure Data when compared to, say, processing speeds of equivalent C++ code?

Specifically in the context of FFT applications.

Is Pd likely to be too slow for some FFT applications? Or can it be sped up near to native code speeds?
