most likely the Tcl/Tk version is too old.
which version do you run (and which arch?)

you can find out by running the following in the tclprompt¹:
    ::pdwindow::post "tcl:$tcl_version tk:$tk_version"

¹ the tclprompt has been removed from Pd-0.47, but you can download it
via deken :-)

afaict, Pd-0.47.app uses the OSX-bundled version of Tcl/Tk; if this is
also true for Pd-0.46, you could use that to run the test as well (iirc
Pd-0.46 still has the tclprompt)
