for testing, please remove all the other (video) backends:
$ mkdir disabled
$ mv gem_*.so disabled/
then please provide the exact output of the following two commands:
$ ls -l Gem.pd_linux gem_videoPYLON.so
$ ldd gem_videoPYLON.so
and the exact version string Gem prints.

i have no idea whether this is the appropriate device string for a
Basler cvcamera. most likely it is not (but we need to get the
videoPYLON backend working before we can do anything else).
