[PD] trouble enabling Jack on Ubuntu compile

While compiling Vanilla 0.49.0 on a fresh installation of Ubuntu 18.04, I'm having trouble configuring PD with the --enable-jack option. PD compiles fully, but I don't see Jack in the audio options, and in fact can't get any audio out of it at all. I have installed qjackctl and jack-tools. What am I missing?

I'm attaching the output from './config --enable-jack'. The only lines in it which seem to relate to Jack are:

checking for jack_set_xrun_callback in -ljack... no
checking for jack_set_error_function in -ljack... no

Any suggestions?
