if you are on Debian (unstable ("sid") or testing ("buster")) or
Ubuntu/"cosmic", you can just do
  $ sudo apt-get install gem

(you can run the above on any version of Debian or derivatives, but on
the mentioned releases, you will get gem-0.94)
