simply put: there's no [pix_record] backend that works on macOS/64bit.

the QT4L backend is only a red herring.
iirc, Gem has a hardcoded default that attempts to load this plugin
(that's why you even notice that such a plugin exists)

but, "QT4L" is an abbreviation for "QuickTime for Linux".
i don't know whether you can install it on macOS.
