Is something creating hidden temp files in the same directory as the audio files themselves or are these in a subdirectory?

I run into this all the time with people (our students) using
standalone audio file players using micro SD cards, such as the
Tsunami wav trigger. The board silently fails to play any files. The
students made the files with Audacity on their Mac laptops. When the
card is read on a WIndows or linux machine it shows a duplicate list
of files all prefixed with the dot. Once these are erased from the
card the player will function normally. There's usually some .DS_Store
stuff as well.
Of course on a Mac these files are all invisible, so you can't erase
them on the Mac itself (and they'll probably get recreated anyway).
