I've found that after 8.6.10 sometimes more "update" or "update idletasks" commands are necessary because of the changed event handling. maybethat's the case here?

This is because it's using the older TK 8.6.10 which is used in 0.51-4. However, it has a number of GUI issues which are fixed in 8.6.12...
