it *does* work with vanilla.
e.g. there's a Debian package "puredata-import" which provides the 
[import] external.

having said that, the rest of alexandre's mail is correct: [import] is a 
Pd-extended thing and has been replaced with [declare] in Pd-vanilla.

There is no reason to go back.

(the only reason that there is a Debian package for this external is, 
that a) compatibility with Pd-extended patches and b) nobody bothered to 
remove it)
