[PD-ot] Cheap acoustic interface setups

Hello list,

I'm trying to get some acoustic instruments to
communicate with Pd as the performer plays them.  Up
until now, I've been using microphones and fiddle~ to
accomplish this, however, I'd like to allow more
direct means: the press of   an instrument key, etc. 
The problem is, I'm on a tight, tight, budget.  Does
anyone have any minimalistic suggestions on how to do
this?
