There was software called MODPLAY for DOS, which included a plan for a DIY
parallel port soundcard running at 9.6 kHz, 8 bit, as this type of
soundcard was directly supported by that software. It uses only resistors,
as a kind of DIY DAC chip. It's better to use an actual DAC chip, unless
your resistors are very precise.

It could be adapted for serial port if you have a RS232 deserialiser chip
with enough bits in it. I don't know what name you will find it under.
It's also possible that you have to use a combination of two chips for
that, e.g. a RS232 chip with a separate deserialiser. I don't know what's
the real name for a deserialiser. If you can't find one, you need in turn
to make it combining a mux and a 8-bit memory.

Alternately, a PIC can function as a soundcard. This is probably easier
for anyone who is more into software than into electronics.
