Are you using ALSA or jack? Those are really the only two alternatives
for PD these days on a Debian machine.

Or are you not getting any audio at all on your desktop?

Standard Debian uses pulseaudio by default. Pulseaudio uses alsa, but
has its own interface on top of alsa. You can find out some about the
different audio servers on a page for I wrote for Ubuntu Studio , here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro. The audio
on a standard install of Debian and Ubuntu are practically the same.
