...hmm, this kind of stuff keeps coming up and reminding me that we 
have to do something about this :-)

...atm, we handle ARB and EXT testing at compile time, which means that 
things break if you use a binary compiled on a system that has support 
for advanced features on a system that doesn't...in this case, this is 
probably the first symbol you're not getting due to a lack of 
ARB_vertex_program in hardware...

...I'm not really sure how the gl headers work on linux:  do they just 
define everything, or do they do checking of the capabilities of the 
system that they're on?

....it'd probably be better for us to adopt runtime extension checking, 
which we minimally do atm for texture_rectangle and client_storage (i 
think)...maybe we should use something like glew, or roll our own?
