I tried both:

[g4:~/gem] synthops% cvs -z3 
-d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.gem.iem.at:/cvsroot/pd-gem checkout Gem GemLibs

cvs checkout: could not open /Users/synthops/.cvspass: No such file or 
directory
cvs [checkout aborted]: use "cvs login" to log in first

This is the CVS version:

Concurrent Versions System (CVS) 1.10 `Halibut' (client/server)
