i get you.
it is very ugly, that if i change configure.ac i have to submit both 
configure and configure.ac.

however, it seems like it unnecessarily complicates the build-process 
(due to the various conflicting versions of the autoconf-tools)

yes, i was always wondering what it is for, since it only does obvious 
things. but then i am using autoconf more often then other users.

i do not doubt that it has its merits.
