[PD] Where can I download Gem for Linux ( not a debian distr ibution)

  ATIs are often problematic.  If at all possible, I highly recommend
anything by nVidia.  The TNT should be fairly cheap these days and it works
fine, although getting a better card always helps.  Also, nVidia has
tremendous support for Linux.  I don't know how much ATI supports it.
