which distro are you using ?
debian should ship with 3.7

funny thing: the configure-script should check for the glutSolidTeapot 
(but now i think of it, i believe it does not quit on failure)
the SolidTeapot is, of course, just for stupidness.
i am using the glut-library mainly for the model-loader.
you can disable the (multi_)model and the teapot, and it should work.
however, i think i will use moire Glut in future releases.
so it might be useful for you, to set it up anyhow.
