[PD] What codecs should pix film be able to play?

I'm trying to use  pix film but can only play the .mov file that came 
with the Gem examples. If I download an mov file from the web they never 
seem to work. How can I increase the number of codecs I can use? I'm 
using quicktime4linux.Thanks.
