[PD] Newbie: How to get fondamental frequency

First, I'm french, so if you answer, thanks to be clear! ;o)
So my question is:
How can I get fondamental frequency from an audio signal in order to drive a "vcf~" center frequency?
I just don't understand what outputs a "fft" ... is it an instantaneous snapshot of harmonics, real and imaginary?
