[PD] mp3 playback in PD

I want to play an mp3 file in a pd patch. I tried the mp3play~ object from iemlib but i don't get any sound, as it says "Layer II not supported". What do i have to do to play the mp3? What a good encoder can i use and what should i check to convert the mp3 to a III layer type?

Also, any alternatives to the mp3play~object?
