yeah, you should NEVER connect any of the objects :)

the xv had some bugs in 0.12.2, those are supposed to be fixed in the
upcoming 0.12.3 (there's a pre-release at
http://zwizwa.fartit.com/pd/pdp/test/pdp-0.12.3-test-13.tar.gz)

about the chained effects. it would be nice if you could run it in gdb,
and send a backtrace, or send a patch that has a reproducable crash.
