Or do it the traditional way and connect something to the inlet of the
slider? ;)

Seriously now: If you load your samples with soundfiler, then
soundfiler outputs the number of samples in the soundfile to its
outlet. You can use this value to do various things, for example set a
sliders range. Right-click a slider and select help for the full list
of slider operations in the [pd edit] subpatch setting the range is
done with a [range from to( message.
