[PD] audio gets "scratchy"

Sorry for the incomplete post - the details of my scratchy audio system are:

Linux (kernel 2.4.x)
Pd 0.37.1
Using the alsa drivers on a Thinkpad
As for the settings for alsa - which ones would be important, and more 
importantly : where would I find them?
