there are most probably no devices; there has to be files like /dev/midi 
or /dev/midi0 to talk to your hardware.

are the correct modules loaded ?
what does dmesg say when the modules gets initialized ? (do something 
like "dmesg | grep -i midi")

are you using devfs ? (if not, you will have to create the device-nodes 
by hand if they are not there)
