that's the standard recommendation  - 
no, -inchannels 6 -outchannels 6 etc. does not work.
And linux is no option because of network/remote stuff.

Just to make sure: You did try to fool pd with 

$ pd -outchannels 6 -inchannels 6

didn't you?

Would installing Linux be an option?
