you didn't read the INSTALL, it says :

make clean
make
make install

how do you start pd?
that's the point...
at startup playlist tries to read
the current directory
that should always be defined in 'pwd'...

start pd from a terminal,
checking that 'pwd' gives you
the right directory and that's it.
