that's because MINT is just horribly outdated.
the current release is based on Ubuntu Bionic (18.04LTS).
the first release of Ubuntu that features Pd-0.50 is Eoan (19.10)
(Pd-0.50 was released in 2019-08)

i wonder why people actually choose MINT in the first place.
it seems to me, the target audience is people whose priority is a slick
design and a no-frills environment.
the latter is somewhat opposite to wanting the latest and greatest
release of project under active development (not that Pd development
moes very fast).

i guess it's recommended as a beginner's distribution.

is there any special reason to install an i386 OS these days?
how "old" is your laptop?
i think i bought my first amd64 around 2004 or so. these days most
mainstream systems that are compatible with i386 are also compatible
with amd64. so why bother?

well, you *could* add apt-sources for Ubuntu/eoan (or
Debian/buster+backports).
but i'm not sure whether i would recommend doing so to a linux newbie (i
have no idea how experienced *you* are; but if MINT was chosen because
of its appeal to beginners, that might be a blocker).

if that doesn't help, you could compile (and install :-)) the
Debian-packages yourself.
