I agree that more is private than what strictly needs to be, but I don't 
think that it's a case of "should not"...

(A read-only wiki is not a wiki.)

I agree if people can (and do) check which pages were recently updated, 
else it's not possible to follow the action (especially: getting a list of 
modified pages by email). I don't recall whether puredata.info does this. 
Does it?

I'm not really using puredata.info. The reason I recall was that there 
were too many restrictions (permissions) on edition, but then, I haven't 
really tried writing on it since 2004. (That might not be the real reason: 
maybe it's just that I don't like writing on a wiki?)
