nice co-incidence, that came just after i had failed to compile gem...

what i did (maybe i should add i know little about c/c++ programming,
still, getting pd compiled and installed was smooth):
* changed the Makefile (uncommented the Linux stuff, commented the SGI
stuff out)
* ran make

result: see attachment

i run rh5.1 on a pII 233 notebook, kernel 2.0.34-1, glibc 2.0.7, glib
1.0.1, glibc-devel 2.0.7, gcc 2.7.2.3. mesa 3.0 works fine (i.e. the
demos that came with it)
ah, yes, gem is 0.77 as provided by wonk.epy
