[PD] problems running pd/gem on suseppc

Looks like a problem with your permissions. Are you able to use other
sound software, like xmms, ... which means: are you sure your soundcard 
works ?

try to set the permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/midi as root:
$ chmod a+rw /dev/dsp*
$ chmod a+rw /dev/midi*

or do the equivalent in any filemanager you are using, (you have to be
root anyhow).

Does not sound good .. did you use a precompiled version ?
It may be caused by some library inconsistencies then.
