[PD] problems and crashes with 0.35test16

Hi Gerard,

This does look like an old version of Tk.  It seems to be missing the
"string map" command which might indeed be more recent than 8.0.  You
might learn this by typing "man n string" to a prompt and see if it has
a "map" option...
