[PD] 8bit arrays

hi list,
i am searching for a possibility to make the display of graphs in arrays faster. 
if i write a lot of data to it, the graph changes jerky/not smoth and sometimes it even disappears. would it be possible to use (and save) 8-bit integers in arrays? and if, how could i do so?
what makes the display so slow? the screen width/height of the display or the size of the array? 
can i write faster into an array, if it is not displayed? (like table)?
