rory,
for RedHat, you should look at PlanetCCRMA:
http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/
it has excellent installation and configuration instructions, as well as
very up to date .rpms of most of what you need for sound. they have ALSA
drivers and a good page telling how to set them up.
