"double clicking"?
I don't remember that this had any meaning in Pd for the last 20 years.
so i guess your memories betray you in this regard (and/or you are
talking about some "other software")

however, you should be able to simply (single-)click on a numberbox,
type your number (even though - as christoph has pointed out - you don't
get any visual feedback that you are supposed to type; just type away)
and hit <kbd>Enter</kbd>, in order to set it to some value.
if this didn't work, i lots and lots of people would have complained
before the actual release. (there are people who compile development
versions of Pd and actually *use* them on all major platforms).
